  • How to Apply

All requests will be reviewed on a quarterly basis after the open submission period completes its quarterly cycle. Funding requests should be submitted during the open submission period for the quarter prior to when a funding decision is needed by the organization. Biogen reserves the right to decline any applications not adhering to the deadline.

See dates below highlighting the quarterly submission periods and their perspective dates the decisions will be communicated.

    Submission cycle Decisions communicated by:
    January 15 - February 15 March 30
    April 15 - May 15 June 30
    July 15 - August 15 September 30
    October 1 - November 1 December 15
  • Funding Requirements

Grant requests must be unsolicited, should typically have multiple funders and must not provide nor promise to Biogen any tangible benefit. Funding amounts requested must be reasonable in light of the activities being funded and grant funds should be used for actual expenses of the activity as set out in the grant application and the grant approval agreement.

Additionally, all prior requests from the organization approved by Biogen must be appropriately reconciled before any new applications from the organization will be considered for funding.

Biogen will conduct appropriate due diligence on applicants and applications and reserves the right to deny any request that does not meet its requirements.

  • Segregation from Commercial Initiatives

Organizations which also perform promotional activities must have sufficient separation (firewalls) between the grant requestor’s or partner’s promotional and medical education business units. Grants to organizations engaged by marketing or promotional functions within Biogen for marketing or promotional activities will be scrutinized to ensure appropriate separation exists between the part of the organization providing marketing or promotional services to Biogen and the part of the organization seeking a grant.

  • Funding Restrictions & Limitations

Requests for funding an ACCME accredited program must be submitted by the organization accrediting the activity (the accredited provider) and requests for funding other accredited programs (i.e., pharmacy, nursing, AAFP) must be submitted by the organization that is responsible for development of the program's content.

If your organization is an accredited provider but you will be utilizing a non-accredited third party implementation provider to implement the proposed activity:

    • The third-party implementation provider must not be owned in whole or in part by, or controlled by a practicing physician or other HCP, or a group practice of physicians or other HCPs (regardless of size)
    • The third-party implementation provider must not be owned in whole or in part by, or controlled by, an individual who is an immediate family member of a practicing physician or other HCP

Funding must not be used for:

    • Travel, lodging or registration expenses for non-faculty healthcare professionals to attend an educational program (there are certain exceptions for healthcare professionals in training: i.e. medical students, fellows, etc. to attend major medical society meetings)
    • Operating expenses that are not directly and exclusively dedicated to the educational activity being applied for (e.g. equipment, salaries, benefits, journal subscriptions, etc.)
    • Support a promotional exhibit or display space/fees (please submit requests for exhibit fees under the Sponsorships request category)
    • Stand-alone entertainment or social events
    • Staff/professional development
    • Advertising space
    • Programs that take place in a location, venue or in a schedule that detracts from the educational activity as the primary purpose

To avoid the appearance of lack of independence of our applicants, Biogen will review the organization's annual operating expenses against the level of individual and aggregate funding provided to an organization on a rolling twelve (12) month basis.

  • Review Process and Decision

All grant requests will be reviewed on a quarterly basis. Funding requests should be submitted in the quarter prior to when a funding decision is needed by the organization.

Funding decisions for Grants and Donations are made through a formal, centralized grant review and decision-making process. Grant & Donation Review Committees assess and approve applications based upon need, design, scientific rigor, independence and compliance, as well as the potential to improve patient care and outcomes. Approvals depend on available funding, the volume of requests, and alignment with Biogen Areas of Interests.  The Grant and Donation Review Committee may request additional detail or clarification of the activity's description or proposed budget, or other items, prior to the final funding decision.

In all cases, Biogen notifies applicants of our decision by email.  Notification of decision shall only be communicated by the Grants Management & Strategic Giving office and no other Biogen staff member is authorized to approve or decline requests.  We receive many qualified and deserving applications and regret that we cannot fund all of them. All applications receive a fair review, and we encourage organizations to reapply for future programs and initiatives.

  • Contracting

All recipient organizations must abide by the terms and conditions as outlined in the Biogen Letter of Agreement (LOA), which is issued electronically to an authorized signatory of your organization once the application is approved. The organization must agree to the terms of the LOA before any payment is processed.

  • Program Execution

Organizations will have the opportunity to provide a project status update and program outcomes throughout the course of the program development and implementation.

If the scope of an approved program or activity changes, organizations must submit such changes via the Biogen Grants & Giving Portal in advance of such changes. Biogen will review the scope changes and assess whether funding for the activity should continue.

  • Reconciliation

Recipient organizations must confirm receipt of funds and attest that funds were used for the purposes described in the contract within 90 days of the event or program end date. The approved use of funding must be reconciled, or assessed against the actual use of that funding, and reconciliation must be documented.

Failure of organizations to appropriately reconcile by the due date may delay further funding or cause denial of further applications.
